Big Weekend:

And a bad time to be without the internet.

With all the news not being reported,  I must first apologize.    My phone line (slash/DSL provider) got in a fight with a giant tree limb and lost last Thursday.   I accept all blame,  because I've been putting off the task of cutting that tree down every weekend since last summer.   So there,  I'm sorry...  happy?

So let's get down to business shall we?

Let's start in chronological order...  I've spent too much time this morning trying to figure out which story would be the most fitting to start off with.   I couldn't decide,  so I'll begin with my least favorite...  the Giants series.   We had a perfect opportunity to gain some groung on the Cardinals BEFORE the big series this weekend.   Blowing it would have been getting swept,   but I wouldn't exactly consider it an all around success.   Luckily,  the Cardinals kept up with our losses.

Now with that out of the way, we kicked off the 4th of July with the much anticipated Cardinals series, always a favorite for both sides.   We should have had a sweep.   I saw the ball 3 call in the ninth inning (which should have been a strike 3 call) just moments before Wood gave up a critical 2nd walk and eventual tying run.   2 out of 3 isn't bad at all,  especially when it's against the Cards,   but a sweep would left me happier than a pig in shit.

Overall though,  no complaints here:

Note to Cubs:   KEEP YOUR EYES ON MILWAUKEE!!

And finally,   a big congratulations are in order to the record 7 Cubs (not including Lou Piniella) who made it into the All Star roster.   Dempster, Zombrano, Wood, Ramirez...   along with starters Soto, Soriano and Fukudome, will represent the Cubs Tuesday July 15th in New York, doing whatever they can to help secure a National League World Series home field advantage.  Had it not been for the snubbing Theriot got by not being on the initial ballots (I had to write him in) we'd probably be talking about EIGHT Cubbis playing next Tuesday.   But, seven is good too.  The seven All-Stars is a franchise record. The Cubs have had six, most recently in 1988, when Andre Dawson, Shawon Dunston, Vance Law, Greg Maddux, Rafael Palmeiro and Ryne Sandberg were all named.
