Pause to Wonder

Dazzling sunrise, blazing yellow.

Forests of pastel green, overgrown with the lushness of hope.

Mountains of silence, whose great voice is only felt.

Oceans ofpower, source oflife within us and around us.

Nighthawks

The city sleeps dark

While a light inside shines on coffee.

A couple and a man

Sip the night in their coffee grounds,

Small-talking the all-ears night man.

They finger money, joints, and cups.

Hard-etched faces, strained by routine,

Nighthawks, buzzing while others dream.

An April Fool

Oh, if I were just an April fool,

Then I'd be wise all the rest of the months.

I'd buy the right stocks,

Put on the right socks,

Eat my bagels with lox,

And be as cunning as a fox.

The Poetry Torture Workshop

We're not comfortable with the last word in line three of stanza two,

We think your images are concrete, but perhaps too concrete.

We all felt sad as we read your poem,

We think the tone was just too dark!

We prefer poetry that is a tad more subtle,

And please, no tears allowed for the poet.

We want to be shown, not told;

And for Pete's sake, romantic poetry has been dead since Wordsworth--

You really think you can top his masterpieces?

Frankly, we were not moved by your poem,

We feel your poem was too simple, too comprehendable!

We all agree that you should take up carpentry,

We're convinced that what you write is not poetry!
