New York psychedelic rock - The Barrens for fans of the Flaming Lips and the Pixies

New York city is a hotbed for good rock music these days, and psychedelic/indie rock quartet The Barrens certainly are no exception. The group are no strangers to the festival circuit, having played New York's CMJ festival and Toronto's NXNE event, and they've also received extensive radio play nationwide.

Their debut EP "Worming" was well-received, but it's the new-er released self-titled full length, uniquely available only on vinyl or digital. Don't except a linear journey. Instead, you'll get a very artistic mix of influences ranging from the Pixies, Radiohead, the Flaming Lips, the Breeders, and even Black Sabbath and Kyuss (most noticably in 'Felt'). Vocal duties are exchanged between Colin Fitzgerald and Debbie Chou, and the two definitely achieve a rare chemistry reminiscent of the aforementioned cult heroes the Pixies. Some tracks are dreamy, warm and beautiful, and others are dark, noisy and progressive. Consider the Barrens that rare band with actual sonic range.
