Afternoon tunes

I don't know about anyone else, but I enjoyed the music from Phil Collins on Disney's Tarzan. Letting my playlist go on while I have been doing chores around my home, it settled on these two songs from the soundtrack, Strangers Like Me and You'll Be In My Heart. Suffice to say that I had the speakers blasting these as well.

Happy listening today!

And it continues..

Hitting shuffle on my playlist, Faith No More- New Beginnings from their 1985 album We Care A Lot comes up. I can't help but crank the speakers and start tapping my feet to the music.

Deciding to listen to another Faith No More tune, I head for a song off their Fool For A Lifetime album, King For A Day

Be sure to come back for another hit!

May I Please Have Some More?

What else am I listening to today? Rush and the music off their 1980 Permanent Waves album. First up, the great song, Freewill:

Followed by another track from the same album, Natural Science:

Enjoy! More to come later on!

A Little Peek...

Good morning! Hope everyone had a great weekend and enjoyed the big game yesterday! We're back with me leading the music this Monday morning and I thought I would share what I am listening to for today. To kick us off , I am listening to Dave Matthews Band right now.  How about enjoying it with me? Here is their song, So Much To Say off their 1996 studio album Crash :

Followed by their song, Everyday, from their 2001 album of the same title:

Enjoy! Keep an eye out for more tunes coming up later this morning!

What Song is it You Want to Hear….?

---Free Bird.  And to finally wrap up our Southern Rock Tribute, it would be sacrilegious to not include the anthem from the legendary Lynyrd Skynrd.

Train Train

Blackfoot was formed in Jacksonville, FL in the 70s.  They had a harder edge to their sound, ala Molly HatchetTrain Train was the 1st song off the Strikes album.

Uneasy Rider

Staying in the country-rock genre, The Charlie Daniels Band springs to mind.  Uneasy Rider features some memorable images and great guitar and mandolin playing.

A Little Southern Style Free-N-Legal

This week's freebie comes from the fine Southern folks at swampland.com; if you want a digital taste of the American South, from music to college football to food, pay the folks at Swampland a call.

Southern Rock from Swampland.com and ThinkIndieOffered via our frequent haunt at ThinkIndie, Gritz: Stone Ground & Southern is a first-class compilation of contemporary Southern rock.  Even so, there's a lot of Southern musical heritage in this release; Tommy Talton played alongside the Allman Brothers, Tommy Crain was part of the Charlie Daniels Band for 15+ years, and Bonnie Bramlett makes an appearance.  Of course, there are up-and-coming acts to be heard as well; my First-Listen-Faves are The Hill from Tommy Crain and the Crosstown Allstars, Preacher Stone's Not Today and Southern Poet by Silver Travis.  (Bramlett's duet with Michael Buffalo Smith was almost enough to make me list four favorites.)

If you're a son of the South--of just a fan of the sound--pick up a copy of Gritz; if you're an eclectic listener, come back and check out our library of freebies, most of which are still available...

Amy

Pure Prairie League is a country-rock band that formed in the late 1960’s in Waverly, Ohio.  Not exactly the heart of Dixie.  I thought they were from Kentucky or Tennessee.  Nevertheless, Amy is a great song, and the picking on the acoustic guitar by lead singer Craig Fuller is mighty fine.

Take the Highway

The Marshall Tucker Band hail from Spartanburg, SC. They named their band from the name they found on a hotel key. With the exception of Jethro Tull, I’m hard pressed to name another band where a flute was prominently used.

Spooky

Staying in the state of Georgia, we have another band that is one of my favorites – The Atlanta Rhythm section. At their heyday in the Late 70’s they were one of the biggest acts in Southern Rock. Guitarists Barry Bailey and J.R. Cobb provide really smooth guitar on this cover of Spooky.

Sunday Southern Rock Tribute

Happy Super Bowl Sunday BLRag music fans. Schwabman here back for another guest VJ fill in. Zoyclem has chosen today to be “Southern Rock Sunday” and since it’s not really his cup of tea, I volunteered to assist in the song selections for the day. When I hear these songs, I always get visions of keg parties in the fields and guys baying at the moon.

To me, any mention of the great Southern Rock bands must include The Allman Brothers. Greg Allman has one of the best voices in the business IMHO. Their improvisionational style combined elements of jazz, blues and rock.  They were groundbreakers in putting Southern Rock on the radio. Let’s get the day rolling with Southbound.

Saturday Shellshag

Since it's too snowy to go skateboarding, I've decided to adapt this Saturday.    Saturday SK8 will officially be back burnered until spring.  But that doesn't mean I have to stop the great tunes that go alone with it, I just have to winterize it... right?

This video is from a two piece band known as Shellshag...  a little tooWeezer-ish, but decent nonetheless.   Take a listen to Resilient Bastard:

Filling A Hole In My Genre List - Free-N-Legal

Amazon Groove from IODAIn reviewing the freebies I've been passing on to you over the last year, I realized that there's a pretty glaring hole in the list.  I've featured everything from surf punk to classical to metal to barbershop, but I haven't offered you any dance/dj music!  (Pause for audience groans.)  No, no, I do listen to dance/electronica/dj every so often--usually as background music--so why shouldn't I dig up some freebies to share with you?

Well, IODA has made it easy for me.  Partnering with Amazon, they've just released Amazon Groove, a collection of 30 dance/dj tracks ripe for the picking.  I'm only naming one First Listen Favorite this time--Pick Up the Phone, from Dragonette, Inc.--so you can explore the other 29 tracks at your leisure.  If nothing else, you'll pick up some indie tracks for 3 hours' worth of background sound at your next party.  Enjoy.

Favorite New-ish Bands, Part IV

This is a bit more emo than most of my Friday videos, but still one of my favorites. The band is Cut Off Your Hands. The song, Turn Cold.

Favorite New-ish Bands, Part III

Dresden Dolls front woman Amanda Palmer teamed up with Ben Folds to put out this quirky single, Oasis. Not the safest video for work, but shouldn't be a problem for most of you.
