Rented 3 movies last week. Two stunk.
Ok, one for three is pretty good at the plate in baseball, but it really stinks up the place in movie reviews.
The Mist by Stephen King should have been retitled The Mess. What might have been a decent B-movie monster flick was made unbearable by King's subplot about the eveeeeeel military, but ruined even more by his unrelenting hatred for religion. I'm a heathen, and still found that emphasis disgusting.
Cloverfield was another disaster. The hand-held camcorder trick got tiresome after the first 5 minutes, and then just became annoying. Really, really annoying. And the little detail of the missing plot line (no apparent explanation of anything) was just an oversight, I suppose.
Sheesh.
Well, at least the third DVD was a good one, even if it was an old one. Ronin with Robert DeNiro and Jean Reno was a decent action picture. John Frankenheimer is good at directing those, and pulls this one off nicely. DeNiro and Reno were good as usual, as were the supporting cast members.

The Mist was horrible, but at least I assumed that going in.
Unfortunately (or perhaps that's FORtunately) Cloverfield was all checked out on BluRay, and I passed on the regular DVD version remaining... I figure if it's gonna make me puke, the least it could do is look good at the same time.
Ronin's killer, but then again I'm a total sucker for those kind of movies.
I'm going to have to hit the movie store this Tuesday in some form of attempt at unplugging myself from the Grand Theft Auto for a week. I did borrow a flick from my friend the other day, but it was wierd and I was tired and it sent me into a crazy dreamscape. I'll tell you more about Revolver (by Guy Richie) whenever the hell I get through the remaining hour and some change.
Skinny, the odd thing about Cloverfield was the commentaries I read on the internet after watching it. Those people must have seen a different cut than I saw, because they had all sorts of plot details that simply were not in the film. Either that, or they were making stuff up to fill in the plot holes.
