Dems Cancel Convention Kickoff at Charlotte Motor Speedway... Due to Budget Shortfall

CORRECTION: Due to Budget Shortfall "Logistical Factors"

Oh, the sidesplitting irony desperate hilarity:

Also courtesy of Bloomberg:

The move comes as party planners are grappling with a fundraising deficit of roughly $27 million, according to two people familiar with the matter who requested anonymity to discuss internal party politics. With a party ban on direct contributions from corporations, the host committee has raised less than $10 million, well short of its $36.6 million goal, said one of the people.

{Dan} Murrey {executive director of the Charlotte in 2012 Convention Host Committee} said that logistics, not costs, were behind the decision to cancel the Speedway event.

Really, logistcs?    Falling nearly 3/4 short of your budget goals had nothing to do with it at all?  "Logistics" was the reason for bailing on their big event at Charlotte Motor Speedway?   Last I checked, it's a pretty big, state of the art raceway, just off a major highway that handles a ton of traffic...  not to mention it also has lots and lots and lots and LOTS of parking and seats over 140,000 in the stands.    What's the matter?  Is it not big enough?  It doesn't get much more logistically sound than that, not for a kickoff event.

What's the real problem?   Obama not quite the draw he was back in 2008?    I would call this a black eye to the campaign if they were smart enought to realize that I'm not being racist by saying so.

Maybe you could just be honest and tell your supporters "hey, uh... look...  it's pretty apparent budgeting isn't our thing".   Now they have to resort to groveling to the Unions yet again for more money.

Perhaps it was the ban on corporations the party stupidly gave the finger to, despite knowing full well that just 4 years ago those same "evil corporations" contributed over $33 million dollars to your convention in Denver.   What?  Soros can't funnel his corporate money through his mutliple political oranizations?

Quick, somebody help me with this math problem...

$ 10,000,000.00
+ 33,000,000.00

Is it more than $36 million?  I can't tell.   I ran out of fingers 9,999,990 fingers ago and using a calculator hurts my brain!

Is some of the problem with the Dems convention being in North Carolina that North Carolina Dem Party is sort of effed up right now? Something about Dem officials and sexual harassment charges.

Maybe that is why the head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is suggesting that candidates avoid the convention.

Or maybe part of the reason to avoid North Carolina is from this little piece of news: Resolution considered by North Carolina Dems.

All the makings for a toxic mixture of failure and despair.

Duff, that's some good stuff right there. Talk about a classic cluster ****.

Maybe another reason for canceling the speedway gala is the fear that it would look bad on TV with only 150 people in the grandstands.

Shimanee crickets duff, I live in NC and I knew nothing of that resolution until reading your link. I get a daily email from the Raleigh News and "Disturber" and as of this morning I've not seen or heard anything about that resolution. Dayum.

I have heard a lot about the dem's problems with their convention being held here, though again the local (left leaning) paper here isn't reporting on it. And yeah the dems have been in one mess after another here for at least the past 8 yrs. We stand a real good chance of voting in a Republican Guvna for the first time in more years than I can calculate off the top of my head. Thanx for the post.

Been gone all day to a conference. Next open thread I will rave about the (not political) speaker I heard.

Thanks for the comments guys, I had read some stuff previously about the troubles in NC. Truly a bad choice for convention location. I don't doubt the press will try not to cover any of the problems. I think they will end up covering the scandal stuff eventually because when the convention goes badly they will need something other than the President's popularity to blame any convention negatives on.

Imagine being a Democrat candidate and being told your best chances of reelection is to not be seen with other Democrats at their National Convention. Talk about disheartening info, lol.
