FREE Golf Carts! From The Government!

WSJ

Actually, to be more accurate it's from you the taxpayer, through the IRS.

It appears that our newer, greener government is giving a tax deduction for certain electric vehicles. And guess what...some golf carts actually qualify.

The federal credit provides from $4,200 to $5,500 for the purchase of an electric vehicle, and when it is combined with similar incentive plans in many states the tax credits can pay for nearly the entire cost of a golf cart.

So, buy a qualifying golf cart and you can write off the entire purchase price up to $5500. That equals... FREE! FREE I tells ya!

Well, I suppose that's good news for golf cart dealers at least.

Maybe I'll scrap my career altogether and get into the golf cart industry. You know where these are really big sellers? Retirement communities.... sell them to the people who are too blind to get a real license. You can see these things cruising to and from the grocery stores because the old timers can't get a license to drive a real vehicle.

This is what you get when you have command and control from DC. I. E .the public option. Golf carts for everyone!!

I love Obama. i do, I really do.

Geez, nothing like loopholes run amuck. The IRS made a pretty stupid decision on this one.

This is fabulous news!!! We were just seriously considering moving to a retirement community in Florida, so this clinches it...

Wes- Are you saying the IRS has become activist in their interpretations? Isn't the IRS just an enforcement agency? Don't they just have to work with the language that gets put into the legislation? Why am I talking in questions?

Joe, If you want to buy a golf cart, they just doubled in price because Skinny bought them all. Pay the man.

duff, the only reason skinny bought them all is because he's a greedy, rethuglican, capitalist pig, and he wishes to rape all us seniors till we bleed from our bank accounts.

For that reason, we're not paying him a damn thing...

This golf-cart fiasco perfectly illustrates tax policy in the age of Obama, when politicians dole out credits and loopholes for everything from plug-in cars to fuel efficient appliances, home insulation and vitamins.

Oh please. Another gem from the Murdoch Street Journal. When haven't loopholes been expoited? Obviously this is a SNAFU and needs to be fixed, but let's not pretend this is some sort of Obama or Dem problem. I remember a few years ago, people were getting huge tax credits (like $38,000) for buying Hummers. No shit.

In the mid-1980s, he said, Congress tightened rules about how much money can be written off on luxury automobiles used for business -- but excluded vehicles with a gross weight of 6,000 pounds or more, partly an attempt to help farmers afford tractors, large trucks and other heavy equipment.

But many SUVs, including the 6,400-pound H2, fall into that heavyweight category, and now a new class of small-business owners and the self-employed, such as construction company executives, doctors, real estate agents and lawyers, is qualifying for the deduction.

Racist SUV's

We actually AGREE with Egg Man, in that this is a SNAFU that needs to be rectified...

Those with heart conditions may find a portable defribullator located at the front of the plane...

What is the effective tax rate change using a $6400 tax credit?
Answer that question, and you'll realize, it's not FREE! and if you think this costs taxpayers anything you do not understand 'commerce'. In the end it's all accounted for because the seller has to claim the profit as taxable in one form or another.
This is merely classic 'cost shifting'.

Two locals bought a truckload of melons for a dollar a piece in Ohio and drove them over to Indiana and sold them for 50 cents apiece at a roadside stand.

Amazed at how fast they sold out, they returned to Ohio, bought another truckload and returned to Indiana and sold out within an hour.

Excited at the success of their newfound business, they were surprised after counting the money that they had less than when they started. One said to the other, "We've sold two truckloads of melons, yet we have less money than when we started!" The other replied, "Dumbass, don't you know anything about business?....we just need a bigger truck."

Without looking at the legislation, I'm guessing that someone in the IRS had to make a call on whether specific vehicles qualified for the credit. I'm guessing that Congress was too lazy to cover details to that degree.

This was probably something like the aforementioned Hummer fiasco of some years ago. The legislators simply didn't realize (or didn't care) that a Hummer fell into that weight category, but some bureaucrat had to decide that they "qualified." From the WSJ article:

The golf-cart boom has followed an IRS ruling that golf carts qualify for the electric-car credit as long as they are also road worthy.

December 11, 2009 at 12:28 | Registered Commenterwesmorgan1

GrayRider, I sold those guys that 'bigger truck'!
They didn't ask price, only if they could pay "x" per month..
Then they complained about having to listen to Rush while filling out the paperwork!

December 11, 2009 at 13:32 | Unregistered Commentergriswold3

GrayRider, I heard about two guys from Chicago doing the same thing. Word has it they moved to Washington, DC.

Again, we agree with the notion that this is an unintentional SNAFU, and that bitching about it is pointless. Administrations have been coming across these for years, ok? We're hopeful that Dr. Utopia and his disciples will rectify it soon enough.

Having said that, we'll say that this president is about as in touch with the public as Mister Heatmeister....

lmao... I used to leave talk radio on all the time when I was working..
You can tell a lot about a person by how much they complain about Rush Limbaugh.

December 11, 2009 at 15:01 | Unregistered CommenterSDiA

Dang, I couldn't work with background talk radio...music is nice, but I tend to stop working and pay attention to speech...

December 11, 2009 at 15:19 | Registered Commenterwesmorgan1

"You can tell a lot about a person by how much they complain about Rush Limbaugh."
What surprises me is the number of people who come in asking for a job, hear Limbaugh, and then complain about how nasty Conservatives are while filling out the application!!

December 12, 2009 at 11:42 | Unregistered Commentergriswold3

I'm ridiculous when I'm working...
I switch it up from music, to talk radio, to t.v. on my computer, sometime a movie...
I just want something on at all times... I don't do handle silence very well.

You think talk radio can be distracting?
Try listening to a Cubs game at work!
;o)
