More Outright Lies From McCain

Courtesy McClatchy:

What happened: A new 30-second TV ad attacks Barack Obama's record on education, saying that Obama backed legislation to teach "'comprehensive sex education' to kindergartners." The announcer then says, "Learning about sex before learning to read? Barack Obama. Wrong on education. Wrong for your family."
[...]
As a state senator in Illinois, Obama did vote for but was not a sponsor of legislation dealing with sex ed for grades K-12.

But the legislation allowed local school boards to teach "age-appropriate" sex education, not comprehensive lessons to kindergartners, and it gave schools the ability to warn young children about inappropriate touching and sexual predators.

The ad is an outright lie.  It isn't "stretching," it isn't "spin," it's a lie.  What's worse is that it's another recycled, repeated Republican lie:

Republican Alan Keyes tried to use Obama's vote against him in the 2004 U.S. Senate race. At the time, Obama spoke about wanting to protect young children from abuse. He made clear then that he was not supporting teaching kindergartners about explicit details of sex.

Of course, this comes on top of their repeated lies about the 'bridge to nowhere,' Obama's tax plan and Obama's support for a bipartisan plan on offshore drilling.  Apparently, these folks don't think they can win on the issues, so they simply lie about them.  No wonder John McCain refused to define 'honor' when asked by Time magazine - he seems to have forgotten it entirely, as far as this campaign is concerned.

you sure you're not 100% Obama yet?

Well, Redbeard, why don't you read the articles you link? *smile*

'Nobody's suggesting that kindergartners are going to be getting information about sex in the way that we think about it,' Obama said. 'If they ask a teacher 'where do babies come from,' that providing information that the fact is that it's not a stork is probably not an unhealthy thing. Although again, that's going to be determined on a case by case basis by local communities and local school boards.'"

In addition to local schools informing kindergarteners that babies do not come from the stork, the state legislation Obama supported in Illinois, which contained an "opt out" provision for parents, also envisioned teaching kindergarteners about "inappropriate touching," according to Obama's presidential campaign. Despite Obama's support, the legislation was not enacted.

Note that the legislation didn't REQUIRE sex education, but merely ALLOWED it, with decision-making authority left to local communities and local school boards. It anticipated teaching young children the danger signs of sexual predators (e.g. 'inappropriate touching'). The legislation even included an "opt out" provision for parents that would override even their local school board.

Again, the McCain ad is clearly a complete lie.

Yeah, Skinny, the repeated lies from McCain are pouring the concrete...

September 10, 2008 at 16:38 | Registered Commenterwesmorgan1

who are they to say?!
this is just a small example of Obama's thought process.

I DON'T want some random teacher telling my Kindergartner what sex is and isn't.
That shouldn't be part of their job...

and please note: the school board and the community isn't in the classroom.

they already teach kids about strangers...
do we need to take it a step further and teach them about kiddie rapists?
then forcing the issue of "Mr Jones? What is kiddie rape?"

Before a teacher even considers opening their mouths and expressing such a topic, there should be a serious sit-down conversation with some parents first (I can imagine many would be EXTREMELY irate if they just up and explained such subjects).

I'd love to hear how Obama would answer that... uh... question.
Lucky for him his kids go to the expensive private schools in Chicago. (or was it the same school as Bill Ayer's kids? Who can keep track anymore? The man is beyond confusing!)

(that's good... call me when you need help with the finishing touches)

;O)

"Lies, lies I told ya',there all lies" as Obama flails around pointing fingers and seeing "Swift Boats" in the shadows.

But Thomas, these aren't just any lies. They are Republican lies!

Wes, I read the article, thank you very much. I saw the actual words printed there. My point was clear, and based upon what those words said. You know, words like:

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told Planned Parenthood Tuesday that sex education for kindergarteners, as long as it is "age-appropriate," is "the right thing to do."

Obama had to "clarify" again (man, that clarifying stuff must be getting tiresome for him) in order to deflect criticism, but still insists that it's proper to have sex education in kindergarten.

Obama is wrong.

September 10, 2008 at 19:59 | Registered CommenterRedbeard

Clarification does get old, especially when it has to be done for the benefit of people who understand the original language perfectly and only perform outrage as an act.

Age-appropriate sex education, as determined by local school boards and communities, with opt-out for those parents who (as you rightly note) may not want teachers to discuss those issues with their children. There's nothing being mandated, so what's the problem?

September 10, 2008 at 22:12 | Registered Commenterwesmorgan1

No, Wes, again you fail to understand. Sorry to disappoint you, but my outrage is quite real.

What's the problem? Are you serious?

Sex education, "age appropriate" or not, does not belong in kindergarten. It's just another leftist ploy to get their social agenda insinuated into the schools at the earliest possible point in our children's development.

Obama needn't "clarify" anything. We understand what he's all about.

Hissy fits, as far as the eye can see, all the way to Election Day.

September 11, 2008 at 14:10 | Registered CommenterWinston

Of course, none of this changes the outright lie of the McCain ad. Our discussions about what might or might not be appropriate for different ages has no impact on the fact that the bill in question did not do what the McCain campaign said in their ad.

September 11, 2008 at 16:21 | Registered Commenterwesmorgan1

McCain is running a disgraceful, thoroughly dishonest campaign.

What's interesting is, the more disgraceful he gets, the better the Wingnuts like it.

September 11, 2008 at 17:17 | Registered CommenterWinston

Winston would know because he's the epitome of class.

September 11, 2008 at 18:13 | Unregistered CommenterMachiavelli

If Obama had simply not tried to push sex education on kindergarten children, he would have avoided the fallout entirely.
