Ten of Eighteen Provinces Now Under Iraqi Control

Diwaniya province is now under the control of the Iraqi government.

More progress of the sort the defeatists on the left said could not be made.

How many provinces are there in Iraq, 20 or 21? Three left to go. As I've said for better than a year on ABP, let's take care of business, hand it over to the Iraqui's and get the hell out of there.

Between the surge working and the soldiers in Iraq saying they want to go to Afghanistan because there "bored", nice timing for Obama to say our involvement in Iraq was and is a failure.

What next, our soldiers are lazy from the dems and the "NYT?"

Sorry for those scratching there head over my math and reading comprehension skills. Headline says 10 of 18 turned over.

This is good news. I hope they can hold it.

It is good news. And there's a lot of it.

Violence down 90% this year.

15 of the 18 benchmarks met by the Iraqi government.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq reduced to a disorganized and fragmented force. Still dangerous, but largely ineffective.

Thugs like Mookie al-Sadr sidelined and contained.

True enough, but I worry about the guys (allegedly) getting R&R in Iran right now, and those who (allegedly) made their way over to the al-Qaeda safe havens in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Whack-a-Mole stage of this conflict could take decades.

Precisely what George Bush said years ago.

July 18, 2008 at 12:14 | Registered CommenterRedbeard

Um, Bush is the guy who basically GAVE al-Qaeda their rest camps in Afghanistan (by going into Iraq) and Pakistan (by propping up Musharraf). There's a tacit acknowledgment of this in the recent discussions concerning the 'redeployment' of troops from Iraq to Afghanistan; there's your Whack-A-Mole in action.

Sorry, you don't get that point, Redbeard. (grin)

Oh, and you mentioned:

Thugs like Mookie al-Sadr sidelined and contained.
I'm wondering how much of his "sideline" status is voluntary; he's a sharp operator, and I have little doubt that he'll make a power play sometime soon.
