There's a Big Red Spot on My Forehead From This One.
During a speech before the National Rifle Association convention Friday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky, former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, who has endorsed presumptive GOP nominee John McCain, joked that an unexpected offstage noise was Democrat Barack Obama looking to avoid a gunman.
"That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he's getting ready to speak," said the former Arkansas governor, to audience laughter. "Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor."
Joke gone bad? The one-liners and quips that's made Huckabee a household name this past year appear to have finally nipped back and bit him in the ass. I like Mike, he seems like an honest, religious and rather humorous guy, but he really seemed to have put his foot in his mouth on this one. Huck, you don't get do-overs... you're a Republican!
I hope none of you out there were looking to him as the Vice Presidential candidate... if so I think it's safe to say you can kiss that goodbye.

Yeah, that takes 'playing to the base' where it shouldn't go...just like the Cheney-hunting-trip joke our esteemed Governor made last week.
Sigh...
Ugly, to be sure. But I doubt whether this all by itself takes The Huck off the running-mate A-list. My guess is that he remains a contender.
Skinny, when The Huck first started campaigning, he demonstrated that he was a fool with akmosr every appearance. Maybe this latest gaff was good, in that it demostrated the same point to more people, and drove a stake into his national political aspirations.
He was smart with one thing (or perhaps lucky) by saying such a thing on a Friday afternoon... when all the weeknight t.v. political hacks' scripts were already planed for that night, and on Saturday and Sunday they were off sipping strawberry margaritas somewhere. If he's fortunate, this may not even hurt him... it's happened before.
