Petraeus Testifies Before Congress on the Surge

Washington D.C.  General David Petraeus testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee today and cited the progress being made in Iraq due to the troop level increases (referred to as the 'Surge').  He has recommended a 45-day delay in reducing these  levels, but was subject to criticism from various Democrats, including Carl Levin, Ted Kennedy, and Joseph Biden; Levin citing the effort as an open-ended commitment. Hillary Clinton also offered harsh criticism, calling for a plan to begin an orderly process of removing the troops. Dick Lugar, the Republican Senator from Indiana, is also expected to issue criticism.

In contrast, John McCain supports the current  troop levels, and was optimistic about the progress that has been made in Iraq.

Barack Obama will speak with Petraeus tomorrow, when the General testifies before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Levin, Kennedy, and Clinton were particularly obnoxious today, ignoring testomony, making speeches, asking questions without wanting answers, and generally making it clear that they cannot, will not, pull for America to succeed in Iraq. Very disturbing to see members of the United States Senate behaving like reporters for al-Jazeera.

this is grandstanding at it's pinnacle!

with all these old guys... stroking their own egos...
it should only be allowed on a PAY PER VIEW basis!!

Actually I've only seen a few short clips so far (I plan to do some extended viewing over the next few days) but it appeared on first glance that there was far less grandstanding than there was at General Petraeus' last appearance on the Hill. No?

Less, yes, but that is relative. My cynical view is that the Usual Suspects had less ability to grandstand this time, due to the hard facts being presented to them.

Instead, avoidance seemed to be Mrs. Clinton's tactic. She listened to the testimony, then made her speech as if she had heard none of it.

Kennedy asked a question in the form of a windy speech, but clearly did not want an answer.

Levin, on the other hand, went for the sarcastic tone. But I'll give him a break and say that his calling the General "Admiral" was a simple mis-statement.

"should only be allowed on a PAY PER VIEW basis!!:

Geez, wouldn't that be a textbook example of a poorly-thought-out business model, Skinny?

I feel like I'm sometimes a bit of a policy wonk (in enjoying reading and watching all those original sources), but I might consider paying to NOT have to watch.
